It is always best to approach The
Stoneworks via Shepton Mallet as the inner ring road and signage in
Wells are dire.
From Shepton
Mallet take the A37 north
past Matthew Clark and the Mulberry Factory Shop, continue up, down and
out of Shepton Mallet, up the hill and past the turning onto the A367(do
not take this turning – stay on the A37) and then look out for NM
Jaguar on your right (3 miles from Shepton Mallet). Immediately past NM
Jaguar and the pub next door (The Old Mendip Coaching Inn) take the
turning to the left onto the B3135 towards Cheddar.
Follow this road for 2 miles until you come to
a cross roads where you have to stop and turn left onto the B3139
towards Horrington. After about half a mile you will pass a pub on your
left (The Slab House Inn) and 400 yards further on turn right into a
lane (Haydon Drove) signposted to The Stoneworks. If you start
descending the hill down towards Wells and
West Horrington
you have gone too far.
We are about 400 yards down the lane on the
right immediately before a sharp left hand turn.
If you must approach from Wells then if
we start at the first roundabout on the western edge of Wells, by
Tincknells the agricultural merchants and the Sherston Inn, take a deep
breath as you are just about to negotiate the infamous Wells inner ring
road!
Take the first exit left at this first
roundabout towards Bath A39/Bristol A37. Go straight over the first set
of traffic lights (through traffic) and then at the second traffic
lights turn right still following Bath A39/ Bristol A37.
Keep straight ahead through a sequence of four
sets of lights (pedestrian/traffic/traffic/pedestrian) and then move to
the right hand lane ready to turn right following the sign to The
Horringtons B3139. At the mini roundabout turn left, again towards The
Horringtons B3139, follow the road through a sharp right and then a
sharp left turn and then on the next sharp right turn you need to turn
left (actually more like straight on), again signposted to The
Horringtons B3139.
If you have got this far unscathed you can now
begin to relax as you are on the right road out of Wells. Follow the
road out of the city and climb the long hill to the top of the Mendip
hills (do not turn off to West Horrington as we are not actually in the
village). As the road flattens at the very top of the hill look out for
a turning to the left (Haydon Drove) signposted to The Stoneworks. Take
this left turn and we are about 400 yards down the lane on the right as
the road turns sharp left.
If you reach a pub on your right called The
Slab House Inn you have gone too far. The Stoneworks is about 3 miles
from the centre of Wells.
